A Trouble Code Is Not a Diagnosis

Welcome to S.W.A.T. Automotive Services Inc Auto Repair!

Modern vehicles contain interconnected computers, sensors, modules, wiring, mechanical components, and electronic systems. When the vehicle detects something outside its expected operating range, it may illuminate the check engine light or another dashboard warning and store one or more diagnostic trouble codes.

A scan tool can retrieve those codes—but the code doesn't necessarily tell you which part needs to be replaced.

For example, a code associated with an oxygen sensor does not automatically mean the oxygen sensor has failed. SWAT Automotive has encountered a vehicle where an oxygen-sensor-related code was ultimately caused by small exhaust leaks affecting the sensor readings. Replacing the sensor would not have corrected the underlying problem.

That's where professional diagnostics make the difference.

> Check out our Warning Light Guide

Our diagnostic process may include:

  • Computer and module scanning
  • Diagnostic trouble code analysis
  • Live vehicle data analysis
  • Electrical circuit and wiring testing
  • Sensor and actuator testing
  • Battery and charging-system testing
  • Mechanical testing
  • Drivability analysis
  • Manufacturer-specific diagnostic procedures
  • Technical research
  • Verification of the underlying failure before recommending repairs

The goal isn't simply to clear the warning light. It's to understand why it came on in the first place.

Advanced Troubleshooting

Advanced Troubleshooting

Advanced Troubleshooting

Not every automotive problem announces itself with a check engine light.

SWAT Automotive can troubleshoot a wide range of mechanical, electrical, electronic, drivability, and computer-related concerns.

Electrical Problems

Advanced Troubleshooting

Modern vehicles depend on increasingly complex electrical and electronic systems.

We can investigate problems involving batteries, alternators, starters, wiring, electrical connections, sensors, modules, switches, lighting, and other electronically controlled systems.

Check Engine Lights

Check Engine Lights

Check Engine Lights

A check engine light can be triggered by problems involving ignition, fuel delivery, emissions controls, sensors, engine performance, air intake systems, exhaust components, and many other systems.

If your check engine light is flashing, the problem may be more urgent and continued driving could potentially cause additional damage.

Starting Problems

Check Engine Lights

Check Engine Lights

If your vehicle cranks but won't start—or doesn't crank at all—the cause could involve the battery, starter, fuel system, ignition system, security system, electrical system, sensors, wiring, or another component.

Testing helps separate the symptom from the actual cause.

Difficult Problem? That's Where SWAT Excels

When Other Shops Haven't Found the Answer

Some automotive problems are straightforward. Others aren't.

Intermittent electrical failures, unusual drivability issues, communication faults between modules, warning lights that keep returning, and problems that occur only under certain operating conditions can require considerably more diagnostic expertise.

SWAT Automotive has developed a reputation for troubleshooting challenging vehicle problems. Dealerships and other automotive professionals in the area have referred vehicles to SWAT when the cause of a problem has been difficult to identify.

Owner/operator Steve Wait has more than 50 years of automotive industry experience and is an ASE Master Technician and ASE Advanced Level L1 Specialist. The SWAT team participates in ongoing annual training to keep pace with changing automotive technology.

Qualified Experts

Service Manager Sai also holds specialized training and certifications involving ADAS, module programming, and hybrid and electric vehicle technology.

That continuing education matters as cars become increasingly dependent on electronics, computer networks, advanced safety systems, and software.

Frequently Asked Questions - Advanced Diagnostics

Please reach us at swatautoservice@comcast.net if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Reading a trouble code retrieves information stored by the vehicle's computer about a detected fault. Diagnosis is the process of determining what actually caused that fault. A single code can have several possible causes, so additional testing may be necessary before a repair should be recommended. Even basic OBD-II scanning providers acknowledge that additional professional diagnosis may be required after codes are retrieved.

Yes. SWAT Automotive provides check engine light and advanced automotive diagnostics in Lowell, MA for foreign and domestic vehicles. Our technicians can retrieve trouble codes and perform additional testing and research when necessary to identify the underlying problem.

Not necessarily. A trouble code identifies a detected condition or affected system, but additional testing may be needed to determine the root cause. Replacing the component mentioned in a code description without proper testing can result in unnecessary repairs.  > Check Engine Light Code

Yes. Many automotive electrical problems do not produce a check engine light. Diagnostic testing can be used to investigate issues involving batteries, charging systems, starters, wiring, sensors, electrical connections, modules, lights, accessories, and other electronic systems.

SWAT Automotive diagnoses and repairs foreign and domestic vehicles of all makes and models, including popular Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Subaru, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Jeep, Lexus, Acura, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Volvo, Tesla and other vehicles.

Yes. Advanced troubleshooting is one of SWAT Automotive's specialties, and the shop has experience with difficult-to-diagnose problems. Vehicles have even been referred to SWAT by dealerships in the area when additional troubleshooting expertise was needed.

A flashing check engine light can indicate a more serious condition, commonly including a severe misfire that could potentially damage the catalytic converter. It's wise to reduce driving and have the vehicle evaluated promptly rather than continuing to drive normally.
